Yup, when the province brought in slots, it killed the bingo halls where local organizations could raise money for local charities.

The province grabbed the money from slots and left rural charities, the ones that ran bingos, left them out to dry.

The sands of gambling revenues is shifting again.

Perhaps somebody should suggest to horse people that potential job losses in the horse and/or gaming industry resulting from changes in the way gambling revenues are generated and allocated, could be more than offset by the revitalization of local bingo halls - the horse people could even run some of these bingos themselves, and get to keep all the money.

This is a self serving position on casinos versus racinos in Ontario. The reasons behind the Windsor casinos declining revenues is twofold. First it was a monopoly in the Detroit region, until Detroit added 3 casinos in Downtown; and second, the US Government introduced much tougher immigration restrictions, slowing the return trip from Windsor. In fact if Toronto found a suitable location, with enough acreage for a Las Vegas, Macau or Singapore type resort casino, you would see millions of more visitors from the US and internationally, than any race track with slots could ever attract.
