Three candidates vie for Region 1 seat on DFO board Friday, February 28, 2014 by SUSAN MANN Three dairy farmers have thrown their hat into the ring to be the representative for Region 1 on the Dairy Farmers of Ontario board. They are: Charles Goubau of Lefaivre, Bart Rÿke of Hammond and Peter Van Sleeuwen of Lancaster. Nominations closed on Feb. 24 and candidates have until March 7 to withdraw from the by-election. Dairy Farmers is holding the by-election for Region 1 (Ottawa-Carleton Region, Township of Cumberland, Glengarry, Prescott and Russell counties) after the previous board member, Ron Versteeg, resigned at the annual meeting in January for personal reasons. His resignation was effective as of the annual meeting. The board member for Region 3 (Frontenac, Grenville, Lanark, Leeds and Renfrew counties) Henry Oosterhof is temporarily representing the Region 1 farmers on the board until the new board member is elected. Mail-in ballots will be sent to all licensed dairy farmers in Region 1 by March 18 and completed ballots must be returned to Dairy Farmers postmarked no later than April 8.
