Pizza as a health food? Monday, January 2, 2012 Domino's Pizza and the American dairy industry are busy re-positioning pizza as a health food. The program is called "Smart Slice" and officials say it is in 300 school districts across the United States and has the momentum to grow by five to eight times in the next five years.The basis for Smart Slice is a 51 per cent white whole wheat crust, reduced fat mozzarella and reduced fat in both the sauce and cheese. Local Domino's restaurants bake up the pizzas and deliver them to schools that are signed up for the system. The pizza meets nutrition guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for school lunch menu items.Domino's, a public company based in Ann Arbor, Mich., bills itself as "a world leader" in pizza delivery, serving more than one million customers daily. As of Oct 18, there were 4,894 Domino stores, both company and franchise owned, in the United States, and another 4,542 stores owned internationally.
