39 Ate Today? Thank a Farmer. Better Farming | October 2024 One of the unexpected things that emerged from the plant tissue results was the distribution or partitioning of B. There were not a lot of differences, or at least very small differences in EL, EL-1, EL-2. The FL, however, had a fourfold increase in B. This supports that B is xylem-mobile, moves up with water and nutrients, and is not very phloem-mobile, as it accumulates in the FL leaf. See chart. Sources vary on what the critical level is for B in the ear leaf. Some sources indicate five ppm, others 10 ppm. What is noticeable is the higher value in the FL. No one knows what the FL should have for B content or if it is a concern at all. The question is, can we increase the mobility of B with a later-season foliar application around fungicide timing? What happens to the yield response if we combine some B in the starter – some at sidedress and some at VT – as a foliar application with fungicides? Recent research indicates that adding a sugar alcohol such as Sorbitol to B increases the mobility in the plant and reduces B accumulation in the FL – and redistributes it to the lower leaves closer to the developing kernels. Another field trial for next year. Stay tuned. We can use more field trials on micronutrients. Reach out to your trusted Certified Crop Advisor and make plans for field trials. The current technology on board the application equipment makes it easier to record locations of treatment areas in the form of “as applied maps”. These maps can be integrated with the yield monitor that records the yields and a simple “yield by product” analysis in most software systems can reveal the yield response to treatments.
