Protecting yourself against rural crime At the OFA, we’re always looking out for farmers, but when crime happens out in the countryside, how can farmers make sure they’re looking out for each other? Fraud is on the rise, so it’s important to: • Talk about your fraud experience • Do not click on any unknown links or emails • Report scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Theft: rural properties are an ideal target for thieves looking for fuel, tools, equipment, firearms, vehicles, and even crops and animals. Remember to: • Lock up equipment • Secure buildings • Install surveillance cameras if appropriate • let neighbours know if you have any concerns with thieves in the area Trespassing and Mischief: people may illegally go onto a rural property and damage crops, hunt and fish, or tamper with fencing. Always make sure to: • Routinely inspect all areas of property • Install proper lighting for increased visibility on your property • Report incidents, even if they seem minor Rural crimes and how to prevent them
