54 It’s Farming. And It’s Better. Better Farming | November 2024 Triticale Triticale is being grown on more acres every year in Ontario. Research at Cornell University suggests that you can expect to harvest two to four tons of dry matter per acre when harvested at flag leaf fully extended. A summary of research indicates that planting early increases yields. Certified crop advisor Tom Kilcer’s research for Cornell showed an almost straight-line yield increase when planted between late August and early October. In Ontario, triticale is being planted in late August after winter wheat and throughout September after corn silage. The most often-asked question I receive on triticale is how much nitrogen to use. Kilcer’s older research suggested a minimum of 20 pounds per acre of nitrogen at seeding. Kilcer feels that too much nitrogen can lead to excess growth and snow mould. Another question I get is how much nitrogen to use in the spring. Kilcer’s research, and also research led by Peter Johnson for the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association when he was with OMAFRA, suggests that you should apply 120 pounds of actual nitrogen in the spring. To date, there have been no issues with leaf diseases on triticale. Forages are a significant crop in Ontario. They should be managed with the same intensity as corn, soybeans and wheat.
