45 Story Idea? Email Paul.Nolan@Farms.com Better Farming | November 2024 FIELD TRIP On Sept. 11, Better Farming hosted a reception at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show in Woodstock, marking 25 years of publishing this magazine. As the second day of the trade show wound down, some 50 guests gathered at the Business Lounge. Guests included industry partners, government officials, magazine staff, and columnists. Publisher and editorial director Paul Nolan spoke to the gathering. He recalled how “25 years ago, Better Farming started with a phone call I made to the Ontario Federation of Agriculture board of directors, and Ed Segsworth, who was president at the time.” Nolan noted the role also played by Ron Bonnett, former president of both the OFA and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. (Bonnett travelled from Bruce Mines for the Woodstock reception and later spoke to guests.) Nolan said that the Outdoor Farm Show had been an important event for Better Farming over the years, especially as an annual connection with readers. “We think about (farm-show founder) Ginty Jocius and what he did to bring the agricultural community of Ontario together here, and how he reached out when we started the magazine. It’s really special to have folks carry on Ginty’s legacy with this farm show, and have them here with us tonight.” After thanking Ontario’s ag leadership, Better Farming staff, and the team at Farms. com (this magazine is a Farms.com business unit), Nolan turned the microphone over to senior sales representative Glenn Ruegg. Ruegg presented long-time advertisers Robert Meier, territory sales manager for Case IH, and Walter Grose, owner of Husky Farm Equipment, with mementos and thanked them. “I’d like to thank everybody for having us here tonight,” Grose said. “Being part of this publication has been a goal of ours – to be at the forefront where people need to see us and where we need to get our message across. We wouldn’t be anywhere else, and we’re proud to be part of the family.” Also speaking at the reception were Canadian Senator from Ontario Rob Black, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Rob Flack, OFA President Drew Spoelstra, Ontario Minister of Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson, and Farms.com president Graham Dyer. BF Publisher Paul Nolan, Ontario Minister of Rural Affairs Lisa Thompson, former OFA and Canadian Federation of Agriculture President Ron Bonnett, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Rob Flack, former ag minister and Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman, OFA President Drew Spoelstra, and OFA Vice-President Sara Wood at Better Farming’s 25th anniversary reception in Woodstock.
