STAY ALERT SLOW SLOW ! ! + Trespassing on farm property continues to be an ongoing concern for many of our farmers across the province. With the warm weather comes an increase in off-road and all-terrain vehicles along with rural trail hikers roaming the countryside. OFA wants to share helpful tips and considerations that farmers and rural landowners can use when dealing with acts of trespass: Post clearly visible “No Trespassing” or biosecurity signs • Although signs won’t necessarily keep intruders out, having them clearly visible at every entry to your property will help build a case with police if you do have a theft or trespassing incident. Control and monitor entry • If feasible, have one central entrance and exit on your property and use a gate or a chain to limit access and clearly establish the boundaries between your farm property and the road. Be vigilant • Keep an eye out for vehicles and drones that look out of place or people that may appear suspicious as many locations are scouted before they are targeted. Make locking a habit • Install good quality locks with keys on all buildings on your property. • Don’t leave your keys inside vehicles, tractors, ATVs, or forklifts, and make sure they are locked when not in use, especially overnight. Fuel thefts are also on the rise, so securely lock any on-farm fuel tanks and storage. Invest in lighting and alarms for your property • Install security lighting in key areas of your property and ensure they are as evenly lit as possible. • If practical, consider installing an alarm system in your barn or other farm buildings like equipment storages that will create noise outside and send you alert notifications. OFA reminds all farmers to be aware of ongoing threats and take precautions to prevent or mitigate the consequences of any trespassers. To learn more about the cost and availability of OFA’s ‘No Trespassing’ or biosecurity signs, members can contact their local Member Service Representative. Find the MSR in your area at ofa.on.ca/msr. OFA will continue to advocate for the protection of farmland, and the safety and security of their farms, families, employees, and livestock.
