33 Story Idea? Email Paul.Nolan@Farms.com Better Farming | June/July 2024 After our March 2024 edition hit mailboxes across Ontario, we received feedback and saw social-media tags from farmers captivated by John Deere’s Build-Your-Own S7 Combine, included as a cardboard model in that magazine. Kerri Murray, a registered early childhood educator at Brookside Public School in Lucknow, wrote to Better Farming, knowing her class would enjoy the activity. “We are a farming community and a country school,” she explains. “I work in kindergarten with 25 little ones who love farming. We mailed some extra sheets to the school, and when they arrived, the kids got to work and had an afternoon of farming fun. “Our learning buddies from an older class helped us assemble the combines,” Murray explains. “When the students were done, they used paper, magazines, glue, scissors, and markers to create farms. “The rest of the day, the students were combining on their pictures and the carpet. Parents reached out to tell us how much their children are loving the combines at home, too!” Murray was able to track down additional combines to ensure the learning buddies were able to participate. “I had asked on social media for any combines people on my friends list had, and collected one for each of our 23 buddies too! “The older students loved the combines as much as us.” BF EARLY HARVEST FOR BROOKSIDE PUBLIC SCHOOL’S FUTURE FARMERS.
