41 The Business of Ontario Agriculture Better Farming | January 2024 means developing a tillage program that fits your soil and cropping practices. Not everyone will no-till corn or soybeans or even winter wheat. I predict more tillage recipes that are grower-specific. We have growers who must mould board plough their heavy land before planting edible beans. There used to be a stigma attached to these growers that was made for them to feel bad because they worked the land. This is being replaced by “I am doing it this way because it works.” On the other hand, other methods are still a lot of unnecessary tillage. Every tillage pass must have a reason. I am not sure they all do. I believe we will see more strip tillage. I said this over 15 years ago and we now have more than before. The process has been slower than I imagined it would be, but we will see even more strip tillage in the next three to four years. I have more thoughts to share in a future article. In the meantime, think on these things that have changed. What changes have you made in your crop production? BF GuardianNetwork.ca Join the Guardian Network today!
