34 Better Farming | December 2024 Follow us on @BetterFarmingON UP CLOSE What do the next 10 years look like? Katie: We’d like to focus on keeping the family involved, including Luke’s dad and brother. Hopefully, when the kids are in school, I can farm a bit more, too. We’d like to keep doing what we are doing. Luke: Busy. How do you manage working with your family? Luke: Communication. If you communicate what you need from everyone that day, it’s a lot easier. It’s good to know if someone is going to be away and you won’t have that help, and also know where everyone is going to be in the morning and at certain times of the day. We have multiple group chats with whoever is around that day and needs to be involved doing specific tasks. It’s a good way to have things written out so you can look back on what needs to get done. It’s hard to have a phone call around here where you can actually hear things clear as day, so having texts to refer back to is a good tool. Our multiple group texts make sure everyone is on the same page every day. Favourite task on the farm? Luke: My favourite is definitely combining. It’s nice to see all the year’s work come to an end. When things are good and work out right, you are happy to see the crop off at the end of the year. Katie: I love running the buggy and I get a bit of quiet time in there sometimes, which is important now as a mom. What’s something you’re proud of? Katie: Luke’s family has done an excellent job at succession planning. It started around seven years ago, and it all works well right now. We are definitely not done, but the transition has been very seamless. Luke’s dad has been awesome at handing over the reins, and we have a lot of family meetings, so everyone has a voice. Combining is a favourite task for Luke. Georgia and Steve bring lunch to Luke. Katie Grove photo Katie Grove photo
