But while a few drainage contractors have been working there for years, they are just copying drainage practices from Southern Ontario, or the Midwest U.S. Northern Ontario needs local drainage research for their local soils. In response, Jesse Tait (Tait Bros. Contracting) has convened a unique collaboration in Rainy River for a five-year project to get the region the drainage information it needs. The collaboration includes researchers and funding partners, and a live installation of the research plot as part of the tour for the Northwest International Ag Expo that was held July 25 to 27 in Emo. Rainy River is near the corner of Minnesota and the Manitoba border. It is flat, with deep clay soils, 170 growing days, 2,500 crop heat units and about 20 inches of annual precipitation. Farmers there grow corn, soybeans, spring wheat, and spring canola, and raise beef as well. What is the research? The collaboration will be determining the return on investment for different drainage spacing. Tait is donating the land and labour to install plots with 10-, 20-, 30- and 40-foot spacing, along with an undrained control. Each plot will be installed at 0.1 per cent grade and For quality workmanship and great service! Call for FREE Estimates.
