Haldimand Soil and Crop Improvement Association is partnering with the Land Improvement Contractors of Ontario (LICO) to host a Drainage Day on Aug. 29 near Fisherville starting at 2 p.m. Hosted by Aaron McQueen at AA Crop Company’s shop, participants will tour erosion control berms and a soil pit on McQueen’s farm, hear about soil mapping, drainage and regulations, and see a live installation from Laidlaw Farm Drainage. Other speakers include OMAFA’s Dan Saurette and Kevin McKague, Woodrill’s Dan Breckon, and LICO’s Peter Johnson, Sid Vander Veen, and Mel Luymes. The tour and speakers will be followed by a BBQ and social time. Pre-registration is required by Aug. 16 at ontariosoilcrop.org. Along the north shore of Lake Erie, Haldimand County has variable soils, though it is best known for its tough clay soils that dominate the area. There has been relatively low investment in water management to this point, perhaps because the price of land wasn’t high enough to justify it, or the belief that water couldn’t reach a sub-surface drain in tight clay soils. But all that is changing these days, and if you tour Aaron McQueen’s farm near Fisherville, you’ll see why.
