Better Pork | April 2024

28 The Business of Canadian Hog Farming Better Pork | April 2024 equipment will become contaminated with PED. Start by working with a veterinarian and the manure handler to develop a plan. Dr. Templeton reminds farmers that PED remains viable in manure for a considerable amount of time and the duration of the disease viability depends on temperature. At higher temperatures (>25 C), the viability of PED decreases. “If it’s not necessary to empty the entire manure tank in the spring, removing just the amount essential to move without agitation, could be one solution to safely transporting manure from a positive site,” says Dr. Templeton, who explains that because the PED in the bottom of the tank is more likely to be alive and infectious, it is important not to agitate the manure. “Later, in warmer weather, the balance of the manure can be spread.” Consideration should also be given to where the manure is going. Avoid putting PED positive manure near negative sites, especially sow herds. Carefully plan transportation routes between the manure pit, barns, and field access routes to reduce any cross over of paths or vehicles by farm staff or farm traffic, like feed or other service vehicles. Injecting or incorporating the manure into soil as quickly as possible is also recommended. Everyone, including the manure handling crew and farm staff, should understand the requirements and importance of following preventative practices. Minimal contact between manure moving staff and farm staff should be a top priority. Dr. Templeton reminds producers that the barn door is the line of separation and to be sure that the Danish entrance protocol is strong. “Limiting of the dirty side of entranceways is also helpful, and use lots of lime, especially during the spring and when moving manure,” she notes. “We’re all working together to manage the risk of disease within and between Ontario hog herds,” says Fox. “Let’s all make careful and informed decisions this spring to keep our animals healthy.” BP GOLDEN LAMPSHADE 110V OR 220V INJECT HDN D3 IDEAL DETECTABLE NEEDLESS CIMA SCALE FOR PIG IN MOUVEMENT MAXX TRACTOR FOR DEAD ANIMAL AND MORE 110V or 220V NEW!!
