32 The Business of Prairie Agriculture Better Farming | October 2024 UP CLOSE we could, to the best of what we were able to. On the custom work side, you don’t have to do very much wrong and bad word travels fast. We make sure we do the best work we can, and that’s all we can do. What do you do in your time off? My wife and I like to go on hikes. If we have time in the summer, we like to go to the mountains and do some hiking and relax away from the busyness on the farm. In the winter, we like to go skiing and snowshoeing and exploring. You could probably say we are into the mountain life, I guess. How do you measure success? I think every year can be successful if you’re doing what you love. I love what I do on the farm, and me and my wife are healthy and happy. I’m happy with that. I get to come home safe every night and we are doing what we love to do, and we are all healthy. What is your favourite farm task? I like seeding and working in the spring. It’s the beginning of the year, and whether you’re trying something new or changing how you’re seeding this or that, you’re doing what you can to set the year up for success. Almost everyone else, including my brother and dad, loves harvest – but I like the seeding side of it. What’s your favourite piece of equipment? I don’t have an absolute favourite. We work with a lot of different pieces of equipment, and they all have a great role in our operation. BF Harvesting peas in 2023.
