We have had a couple of customers whose brakes failed completely because they didn’t get them fixed when the brake warning light came on. They kept driving for a few months until they had no brakes at all. Pay attention to those warning lights and get things repaired before disaster strikes. ABS warning light Most of you are familiar with the automatic braking system (ABS). In the old days, you had to pump the brakes when the road was slippery. Now the ABS system does this for you. You just push hard on the brake pedal and if your vehicle senses one of the wheels slipping, it starts pumping the brakes for you until you feel the brake pedal pulsate. Each wheel has a sensor that helps us stop quickly when it’s slippery. Problems are often related to a bad wheel sensor or bad wiring to the sensor. Sometimes the sensor is part of the wheel bearing, and you have to replace the bearing if the sensor is bad. When the ABS light comes on, usually your regular braking system still works. Well, these are just some of the systems that help us drive down the road. They are not a substitute for careful driving – just features to make us safer. Make sure you know what systems your vehicle has, how they work, and how to shut them off if they aren’t working right or if you don’t want them turned on. For more information, read your owner’s manual or search online for Transport Canada information on the system you have. An auto repair industry official once said that it was predicted that the accident rate would go down with the introduction of these systems – yet that has not happened, for two reasons. First, drivers are not being as careful as they once were, because they rely on the vehicle to watch for hazards. Second, touch screens on radios and heaters are harder to control without looking at them, compared to the old knobs we used to have on the dash. With the knobs, we could adjust the heat and noise by braille, but now we have to look for the spot to touch on the screen. I guess this is progress. Travel safely and enjoy the drive – wherever you go.
