With more canola acres in rotations and management practices that lead to the kind of dense canopies that are conducive for disease development, sclerotinia is now the most destructive canola disease in Canada according to the Canola Council of Canada. As strong crusher demand continues, adding sclerotinia disease prevention to your canola management plan is more important than ever to protect your yields. Known as a ‘yield robber’, sclerotinia infections severely restrict plant growth. Infection occurs when the canola crop is flowering. Wet or humid conditions, especially in lower parts of the plant canopy, are ideal for infection, allowing spores to use the flower petals as an energy source to support ascospore infection and colonization. Infected flowers fall into the canopy where the disease proceeds to choke the plant of vital water and nutrients. Managing sclerotinia means staying ahead of the disease, because once a field is infected, you won’t often see the effects of the disease until it’s too late. Once a canola plant is infected, the full impact of the disease won’t be obvious until the end of a plant’s full maturity, or a few weeks before harvest. Planning ahead and having a prevention plan is your best strategy against sclerotinia infection. Due to its small spores, the disease is hard to predict and identify. And since it can overwinter in the soil, remaining in the field for several years with the potential to cause future crop infections, a fungicide treatment should be part of any disease risk management strategy. Viatude™ fungicide with Onmira™ active is a new tool canola farmers can rely on. Providing best-in-class sclerotinia protection from two of the strongest sclerotinia actives on the market, Viatude delivers excellent coverage and plant protection against the disease. The Onmira active in Viatude is highly mobile – it quickly and efficiently surrounds, penetrates and protects the leaf and stem from sclerotinia infection. This type of systemic movement and coverage from a fungicide is critical for maximum protection in a dense canola canopy. Available in an all-in-one premixed formulation for ease of use and integration into any canola management system, Viatude also offers true resistance management, with two active ingredients that are effective against sclerotinia and reduce the risk of resistance. If you’re concerned with protecting your canola yield potential, your soil and subsequent crop yields, a proactive protection plan is necessary. For stronger and more vigorous canola, peace of mind and a solid return on investment, make sure your prevention plan includes a Viatude fungicide application.
