Ontario Federation of Agriculture members wanting to be elected to the board of directors from five zones across Ontario have until the end of this month to submit their nomination form.
The zones with elections are:
- Zone 2 – Grey and Bruce.
- Zone 3 – Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk.
- Zone 5 – Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth, Niagara South, Niagara North.
- Zone 6 – Lambton, Middlesex.
- Zone 10 – Durham, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton.
The federation has 18 members on its board – one from each of the 15 geographical zones and three directors at large. The directors serve a three-year term that starts the day after the federation’s annual meeting in November, says general manager Neil Currie.
There are five zone elections every year.
So far, a few nomination forms have been submitted but “typically we don’t see nominations until the last week,” Currie says.
Nominees can refuse the nomination after all potential candidates’ names are published around July 8. “We put that in our election policy that you get the opportunity to turn it down once you see who else might be running, things like that,” he explains.
The nominees have to be federation members and live within the zone they’re being nominated from. The nominators also have to be federation members and live within the zone they’re nominating someone from.
The voting starts in mid-August and goes until the first week of September. It’s electronic or mail-in voting, Currie explains.
